Imperial's Schools of Convergence Science facilitate transdisciplinary work and unique combinations of knowledge to further our Science for Humanity strategy.
Each School is designed to spark discovery and accelerate progress in targeted areas. The schools will be mission-led, shaped by society’s most complex challenges in Health and Technology; Sustainability; Space, Security and Telecoms; and Human and Artificial Intelligence.
Rather than aligning to any one field, the School creates space for deep collaboration at scale, focused on societal impact, scientific rigour and intellectual freedom to thrive.
What is Convergence Science?
Convergence Science unites disciplines, sectors and methods to tackle society’s most complex challenges. It moves beyond collaboration to deep integration, combining knowledge in novel ways to develop and demonstrate barrier-breaking tools, models and solutions.
Each School is a place of adventurous thinking, entrepreneurial disruption and independent inquiry. Cross-sectoral partnerships and new research cultures lay the groundwork for emerging breakthroughs that benefit all involved.

The School of Health and Technology
Convergence science in health and technology brings together business and social sciences, engineering, physical sciences, life sciences and medicine. Through this combination, we will develop innovative ways to address pressing and emerging health and healthcare challenges globally in order to enable healthy futures.
The School of Space, Security and Telecoms
In a world of accelerating change and growing uncertainty, the convergence of space, security, and telecommunications is redefining how we live, connect, and respond. Imperial’s convergence in these areas will create advances for a safer, connected world.
The School of Sustainability
Answering intractable challenges, such as climate change, the delivery of clean energy and flourishing natural spaces, requires equitable interdisciplinary innovation from discovery science through to policy translation. Our school will work to achieve this.
The School of Human and Artificial Intelligence
AI will reshape every part of our life, and the future will lead to an increasing convergence of AI and Human Intelligence. Cooperation is crucial for complementing and augmenting human intelligence.
The most intractable current global challenges – climate change, health inequality, digital security – are borderless and deeply interconnected. Imperial’s new Schools of Convergence Science meet this complexity head-on. By uniting the full breadth of our university’s excellence, these Schools will act as ‘constructive disruptors’ to create powerful, integrated solutions with global impact.
