If you missed alumnus Sumit Paul-Choudhury's Research Seminar earlier this year you can now watch the event recording online.

The Centre for Languages, Culture and Communication was delighted to host alumnus Sumit Paul-Choudhury for a Research Seminar this January. Sumit was interviewed by Humanities and Social Sciences Field Leader, Dr Michael Weatherburn and had the opportunity to discuss his newly-published book The Bright side: How Optimists Change the World, and How You Can Be One.

What should we expect from the world – benevolence, cruelty or indifference? Often dismissed as a lazy or naïve attitude to life, Sumit argued that optimism both raises and answers fundamental questions about how we perceive the cosmos and our place in it.

The event included a Q&A and book signing. The author offered tips on learning to take a brighter view of our world and the future ahead, explaining how he drew upon a wide range of subjects and experiences to write his first book.

Whilst an Imperial College London BSc Physics student, Sumit took Professor Jim Secord's History of Science class at CLCC (formerly the Humanities Department). After graduating with first-class honours, Sumit worked in journalism as well as completing a Master's in Mathematics. His career has spanned a range of science and journalism fields including working as Editor-in-Chief for the New Scientist.
