Motivations and Frustrations
Motivations
Lydia enjoys the challenge of STEM subjects but also enjoys being creative. She has always loved film in particular and would like to find a job that allows her to combine the things the enjoys. Getting a 1st in her undergraduate degree has motivated Lydia to study hard.
Frustrations
Lydia has no work experience in the engineering field and she is worried that this will affect her chance of getting a job. She is also not sure exactly what she wants to do but she knows what she doesn’t want to do. This is making her feel a lost and not confident about making a career decision.
AA Journey
Lydia uses Attributes and Aspirations the sections in bold refer to the units she takes.
In SD2 for ENG – Your Skills and Values Lydia selects a set of skills; she believes she can demonstrate and works on evidencing them for her CV. For example, she can use her customer service role at the cinema to evidence planning and organisation, time management, communication.
During her job search, Lydia finds an advert from the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum and CVA2 for PG - Dissecting Advertisements helps her explore how the advert is constructed and what relevant experience she has that can be put into an application. CVA3 for ENG – Application Language she visits the Careers Service and they look at how this role would fit with her current experience and her future goals.
In CVA4 for ENG CVs Lydia starts to work on her CV and discovers the idea of a database CV. By identifying the similarities between different types of CV and what needs to be different she is able to write three for different types of role.
She decides to apply for the role at the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum and in CVA6 – Cover Letters she researches who she could ask for more information and then uses that information to write a cover letter. This unit explores how to write an effective cover letter by addressing your motivations and values and how they relate to the company you are applying to.
In EE3 for ENG – Organisation and Prioritisation Lydia uses the Eisenhower priorities matrix to help her fit in a last-minute film review. Finally, EE5 for MED – Practical Tools explores how Lydia uses Outlook to manage her work at the museum, her freelance work, and her personal emails.
